As serene as this photo looks, what I remember when I look at this picture was the sheer exhaustion and despair I was feeling after months of barely sleeping.
The next day I took a yoga class. As I lay in savasana I thought “I can’t keep doing this. Barely sleeping is killing me. But, I don’t have the energy to sleep-train.” Six months earlier, we had been graced with boy-girl twins. We also already had a 2.5 year old. Our older son really struggled with transitioning to a bigger family. If we weren’t up in the middle of the night with one of the twins, we were helping our older son figure out all his emotions about this huge life-shift. In the whirlwind of it all, we didn’t have a chance to set up any healthy sleep habits for the twins. Survival-mode was our only gear. The thing was, we knew it didn’t have to be like this. We had used the Sleep Sense newborn program with our first son. He slept 8 hours by 8 weeks, and 12 by 10 weeks. It seemed like a miracle, but then I kept meeting other parents who had had similar experiences with their newborns on the program. With the twins, we didn’t have the resilience to follow through on the newborn program. They rarely slept at the same time, so someone had to be awake at all times. My husband and I took shifts. He would sleep from 8pm to 2am, and I would rest from 2am to 8am (with at least one breastfeed in between). “Sleep when the babies sleep” mantra was impossible… so, making up sleep during the day was out of the question for me. Although most people don’t have twins, MANY people have a parenting story like this one. Exhausted, unwell, unhinged, surviving… That afternoon after my yoga class, I had a tearful conversation with my husband about how drained I felt. I also shared that I didn’t know how to find the energy to sleep-train. He decided he would take the lead on the sleep training, and, because of his support we DID start training that night. And you know what? It took 2 nights and both babies were sleeping 11 hours. Naps took a bit longer to establish, but, within a week and a half, both babies were excellent sleepers. Two nights, a loving sleep-coaching program, and way less crying than I expected. The result? MUCH happier babies and MUCH healthier parents. I hear the same story over and over from my clients. “If I only knew it would be this quick, I’d have done this months ago!” “Honestly, the hard first night wasn’t at all as hard as I imagined.” “Why didn’t I just rip this bandaid off earlier? One night of unpleasantness is way easier than day-after-day of it!” So, if this resonates with you, know that I get it. And, I’d love to help you and your family get to a happier and healthier place.
