I just popped out of a serious case of the grumpies.
I knew I was imbalanced - life has been a bit bonkers recently. We got home from the summer into a rental because we’re doing a renovation on our home. My kids started school almost immediately and, subsequently, we are toilet training TWINS. Cue the grumpies. But, here’s the thing. I know how to NOT have the grumpies. Part of my job is to TEACH how to stay balanced, how to put yourself first, how to “put your own oxygen mask on first”. My husband and I laugh secretly about how we teach the thing that WE need the most. So today, I’m going to share my truth: I’m pretty bad at choosing MY health and wellness over other people’s. The good news? I’m finally getting a handle on it. This spring I had a night away with one of my oldest friends. We talked about how I allow myself to feel balanced for a few days, and then swing back to feeling constantly rushed, overwhelmed and drowning. I remember saying to her “I feel incapable of taking care of myself while being a mom, with my work and considering other relationships”. She looked at me in a loving and curious way (as only besties who have known you through MANY facets of life can) and said “but you DO take care of yourself. You eat really well, you have a supportive family, you go to health appointments… you are doing better than most people.” I hadn’t seen this. I WAS taking care of myself, so, why I was I always swinging from balance to off-kilter? Then she asked: “What is the one thing you aren’t doing that you know makes you feel awesome?" My answer? Working out. Mic drop. I am always SO zen after a good run or an awesome yoga class. And, I do better when I am doing those things daily. She then recommended a book: Burn Out: the secret to unlocking the stress cycle by Emily and Amelia Nagoski. I read the book this summer - I laughed, I sobbed, I felt elated… and understood… and motivated. And then I started running. Every day. Life got SO much easier. A 4 year old and toddler twins could barely get me down. I slept well, I worked better, I solved problems with grace. Now that I have the information to back up WHY my stress reliever is effective, and, why women are taught NOT to choose themselves - I can slip back into working out much more quickly and easily. Today - I went to yoga. Grumpies = over. Tomorrow, and for the next few days - I’m going on a run. So now I’m going to ask YOU: “What is the one thing you aren’t doing that you know makes you feel awesome?” Now go do it! Xo
