If I can’t “have it all”, then, maybe I need to start asking “what can I have?”
I grew up in a generation of women who were taught that we COULD have it all. A career, a family, a healthy relationship, a balanced lifestyle, and (of course) the perfect body.
Lately - I’m starting to see that that concept is a little bonkers.
Maybe it’s the global pandemic taking away childcare. Or, maybe it’s the wisdom of my 40’s (ha!).
But - I just listened to Michelle Obama’s first podcast. It was incredible (obviously… who doesn’t like listening to Michelle and Barak Obama for 48 minutes?)
They shared something that I’ve been mulling for quite a while. Their narrative was: “you sacrifice for family” - and they are baffled when they meet professionals with young families who think instead that they deserve EVERYTHING.
Ping… (that’s the sound of the penny dropping).
What should I shoot for then? Or, more specifically: “What CAN I have?”
Probably what I already do…. 3 lovely kids, an awesome husband, a business in start-up mode… intermittent exercise, rare visits with friends which feel like a trip to Disneyland (and leave an ache in your heart that they don’t happen more often).
Maybe this is IT.
Depressing? Maybe a bit. Freeing? Absolutely.
When we ask ourselves “what do you want” - and your answer is EVERYTHING… then failure is inevitable.
But asking - what is? What could be? Then you’re seated in a much more realistic seat. One that takes into account your small children, or sick parent, or heath issues, or a desire for children, or a partner, or your need for a better job… But, it doesn’t ignore what you already DO have.
My oh my. Thank you Obamas… yet again.
